What Does It Mean To Be Human

It started as a simple letter to my grandmother, Dean C. Winters, my lifelong poetry pal and muse. I asked her the same question I’ve asked for years: How do we stay human in a world that moves this fast?

My son Chris helped turn that letter into a melody, adding his modern sense of rhythm and his deep understanding of technology. Along the way, AI gently “peeked in,” offering quiet suggestions but never replacing the heart behind the song,  just adding another layer to our family conversation.

The result is a blend of acoustic warmth and soft digital textures, It’s a reflection on connection in a world of constant scrolling,  a reminder that even as electrons pull us closer, they can sometimes make us feel further away.

At its core, the song doesn’t try to answer the question in its title. Instead, it invites you to pause, breathe, and ask it with us, across generations, across screens, and across time.

Ink on a Page (a haiku)

Ink on quiet page
grandmother’s whisper returns
what makes us human?

Son shapes digital light,
soft circuits lean in to learn
heartbeats lead the way.

Skywide question drifts,
wind between the generations
connection is breath.
